Maine's State-Supported Liberal Arts College
Established in 1864 as Maine’s first public institution of higher education, the University of Maine at Farmington is Maine’s selective public liberal arts college, offering quality programs in teacher education, human services and arts and sciences.

Farmington is Maine's state-supported, traditional, residential, liberal arts college. With enrollment limited to just 2,000 students, we’re about the same size as many of New England's most selective private colleges and offer many of the same advantages, yet at a very attractive price point — providing a tremendous college education value in a spectacular natural setting.

The University of Maine at Farmington is a founding member of The Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) an exclusive national group of 25 public colleges and universities committed to providing superior liberal arts and sciences education.

Farmington is also one of just 20 colleges and universities across the nation featured in Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter, a book identifies schools that serve as models of educational effectiveness. Schools featured include Farmington, the University of Michigan, the University of Kansas, George Mason University, Gonzaga University, among others. (Wheaton College in Massachusetts is the only other New England college profiled.)

Innovative Curriculum: Fewer Classes But More In-Depth Learning
Farmington operates under an innovative four-credit system, similar to what many private colleges use. This means that instead of taking five classes per semester, students here are expected to take four.

The beauty of this progressive new curriculum is that it allows for even more in-depth learning. Raising academic expectations, engaging students in deeper thinking, providing students even more opportunities for undergraduate research and internship opportunities.

Here at Farmington, we've developed individualized course "tracks" in each pre-professional area — specific courses identified as ideal for meeting the entrance requirements of medical schools, law schools, and MBA programs.
