Honors & Academic Support
The Honors Program
The UMF Honors Program is open to outstanding students who have shown exceptional motivation, creativity, and a strong interest in the world of ideas.
The Honors Center, located its own comfortably refurbished building on campus, offers Honors students a quiet study area, library, computer facility and space for classes and academic activities.
Participants in the Honors Program are eligible for small, seminar-style interdisciplinary courses and a variety of specially planned lectures and field trips. Honors courses stress independent thinking, research and writing skills, and oral expression. The skills developed through Honors study apply to any field and provide excellent preparation for graduate or professional study.
Learning Assistance Center
Located in Merrill Hall, the UMF Learning Assistance Center provides tutoring, at no cost, in nearly any UMF course. If you feel you could use additional help with a course, just come into the office, fill out an application and you'll receive the personal attention you need. Help is also available in math and writing on a walk-in basis at the on-campus Math Clinic and Writing Center. (The staff that runs these programs are phenomenal — trust us.)
If you haven’t provided the Admission Office with SAT I scores or if your results were below UMF’s required scores, you’ll need to take a placement test to determine your readiness for UMF’s introductory math or writing courses. We’ll notify you of the test dates, or we can coordinate your placement test with a planned visit to campus. (Contact the UMF Office of Admission (umfadmit@maine.edu or 207-778-7050) for details.
