Scholarships Offered at UMF
Below is a list of scholarships currently offered to students by the University of Maine at Farmington. Some of these scholarships are available to freshmen, others are not or carry certain restrictions. Please contact the UMF Financial Aid Office, 207-778-7100 or umfaid@maine.edu for details.
The AL MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND is to be awarded to a graduating senior who has shown excellence in the field of geography. Selection to be made by the geography faculty.
The ALICE MILLER JOHNSON (CLASS OF 1939) SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The ALICE RICHARDSON DURGIN '37 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student who has taken at least 30 credits, has a G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and has financial need. Preference shall be given to a student with a music minor.
The ANNA A. SMALL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to UMF seniors majoring in special education for children with behavioral disorders. Academic standing after completion of one semester is considered.
The ANNE MARIE TESSIER SCHOLARSHIP shall be awarded annually to a graduate of a high school in Jay or Livermore Falls, Maine. The recipient shall have achieved high academic standing and have financial need. Preference shall be given to new, first-year, or in-coming transfer students who meet the above criteria.
The Arthur A. and Euleta Rand Webb 1935 Scholarship shall be awarded annually to one or more UMF students who is a Maine resident, is majoring in elementary education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing, and has financial need. Preference shall be given to residents of Washington County, Maine.
The ATON HYLTON MEMORIAL FUND is used to make an annual award of up to three hundred dollars ($300) to a UMF student majoring in creative writing and taking a semester abroad at any of UMF's established exchange sites. The student would have to demonstrate need; high academic standing would not be a requirement. Selection is made by the UMF International Studies Committee. Applications for this scholarship are included in the study abroad application packet.
The Anne E. Mullin Scholarship shall be awarded to a student who is 25 years or older and who will have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours by the time the scholarship money is dispersed. Selectioin is based on academic record, career golas, and demonstrated leadership (on campus and/or in the community).
The BATH IRON WORKS (BIW) SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a meritorious or needy student, or students, with preference given to BIW employees or children of BIW employees. Contact the Financial Aid Office directly if you are interested.
The BETA GAMMA CHAPTER OF PHI SIGMA Pl SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student with a GPA of 3.0 or better and who, through the student's response to a personal essay in the application process, demonstrates knowledge, fellowship and leadership, excluding athletic ability or participation. When all else is judged equal, preference to be given to academic standing rather than need.
The BRANDON A. AND JEAN MacPHERSON MATHESON SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student from Maine majoring in education. The recipient shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students from SAD #47 who have graduated from Messalonskee High School.
The Beatrice Hudon MacInnes Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is a Maine resident majoring in elementary education. Preference shall be given to a disabled person.
The CANDANCE JOHNSON VINETTE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student(s) for the senior year of study in either an associate or baccalaureate program. The student must have demonstrated financial need, have attended UMF for at least one year, be in good academic standing, and not have earned a prior baccalaureate degree. Preference to students with evidence of leadership and service to others. Selection of recipients to be made by the UMF Financial Aid Office which shall administer the fund.
The Carolyn A. Stone Grant-in-Aid Fund shall be used to make an award to a UMF student majoring in education who is from Maine. The recipient shall have earned a minimum of 32 credits. Preference shall be given to female students.
The CHARLES L. LEAVITT SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who has earned at least 30 credits, has financial need and who is involved with UMF theatre.
The CLAYTON REED AWARD shall be given to a UMF student who is student teaching. Preference shall be given to students with financial need.
The CLIFFORD OLIVER AWARD is given to a full-time mathematics major at UMF who has completed 24 credit hours in the major, earning at least 9 at UMF. Academic standing after successful semester is considered. Contact the Mathematics and Computer Science department.
The DAR SCHOLARSHIP is provided by the Farmington area Colonial Daughters Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The scholarship is to be awarded to an upperclassman pursuing a degree in education. The student must be a resident of Franklin County.
The DAVID SHERMAN BEACH, JR. & JANIE LOCKHART BEACH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The DOC & TOBY DES ROCHES SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is awarded annually to matriculated students in the Ski Industry Program showing evidence of initiative, personal presence and excellence in the program, and who bring credit to UMF. Selection is made by the Ski Industries Committee.
The DORIS FRANCES LAKE SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to outstanding matriculated freshmen students enrolled in early childhood education or a home economics related program, who show evidence of academic achievement, scholarly potential and qualities of leadership, excluding athletic ability or participation. Upperclass students in the aforementioned programs who maintain academic honors may also apply, with preference given to sophomores.
The DORIS HOLBROOK WARREN ALLEN '33 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a graduate of Brunswick High School who demonstrates financial need. Recipients of the scholarship must be in good academic standing. In the event there are no qualified recipients in any year from Brunswick High School, the income may be granted to a graduate of Mount Ararat High School under the same guidelines as set forth above.
The DR. EDWARD S. AND BARBARA DICKEY AMBROSE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student, or students, majoring in education. The recipient(s) shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing, and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students born in the State of Maine and graduated from a public school of secondary education in the State of Maine.
The Dr. Peter H. Williams Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is an education major, either elementary or secondary, with a concentration in math. The recipient shall have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.8 and have proven to be hard-working, goal-oriented, and of exemplary character. The scholarship shall be renewable upon the student's maintaining the above stated GPA. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee upon consultation with UMF's math department.
The Dr. Peter H. Williams Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is an education major, either elementary or secondary, with a concentration in math. The recipient shall have achieved a mimimum GPA of 2.8 and have proven to be hard-working, goal-oriented, and of exemplary character. The scholarship shall be renewable upon the student's maintaining the above stated GPA.
The DUANE L. SMALL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in elementary education who graduated from a Maine high school. The recipient shall have attained sophomore status, be in good academic standing with a grade point average of 2.5 or above, have financial need, and express a strong desire to teach. Selection shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The DR. JOHN H. ROMAN LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who has demonstrated a passion for leadership and the qualities of a leader in any one of the numerous clubs or organizations that are funded by the Student Activity Fee. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Student Senate Advisor in consultation with the student Senate Scholarship Committee. The applicants will be required to submit an essay answering the question, What are the qualities of a responsible leader. Contact Student Senate for application.
The E. HAZEL ANNE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has attended UMF for at least two semesters with meritorious academic achievement and demonstrated service to the campus community by active participation in one or more organizations and activities (excluding athletic ability or participation); preferably a student entering his/her junior or senior year.
The E. Irene Allen and Frances Allen Black Scholarship shall be awarded annually to enrolled out of state students who have completed one year at UMF, and who are in need of financial assistance.
The E. MUNROE (CLASS OF 1941) & JUANITA HAWKINS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a non-traditional UMF student with financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The EDITH L. GREENE SCHOLARSHIPS are renewable scholarships made on the basis of meritorious academic work and/or financial need. Preference is given to residents of Wilton, Maine and secondly to residents of other locations in Franklin County, Maine.
The EDITH MAXWELL THORNQUIST SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a women who is currently a junior and a native of Maine, who is preparing for a teaching career. Academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
The EDMUND D. CURRIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides a scholarship award to an elementary education student who is a Maine resident, who has attended UMF on a full-time basis for at least two years, who has completed all course work except for student teaching, and who is a traditional age student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; preference to be given to a student who also has a demonstrated financial need.
The EDNA HIGGINS FUND provides scholarship awards for students at all UM campuses, with preference given to students from the Greater Portland area (Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough).
The EINAR A. OLSEN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a full-time student majoring in Health Education, who is entering his/her junior or senior year, has financial need, and has contributed to college and community life, excluding athletic ability or participation.
The ELDRED (RED) ROLFE AWARD is given to a graduating senior who has shown excellence in the field of geography. Selection is to be made by the geography faculty.
The ELEANOR WOOD SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to an outstanding junior or senior English major (either in arts and sciences, or secondary education) who has been a student at UMF during both his/her freshman and sophomore years. To be based on academic achievement in the field of English. Recipients must be of good character, in good academic standing, and must have demonstrated high academic achievement in all English courses. Nominations may be made by English faculty who have had the student at least one course and/or by academic administrators, but the recipient will be selected by the Scholarship Committee based on review of the student's academic records. No other factors such as financial need, extra-curricular activities or other scholarships/awards received, will be considered.
The ELIZABETH '32 & RALPH SHRUM, GERTRUDE MEADE, HAZEN HENDERSON & MARY ARMSTRONG SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need.
The ELIZABETH HENDERSON SHRUM & RALPH SHRUM SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has taken at least 30 credit hours and who also is in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance.
The ELIZABETH HENDERSON SHRUM '32 AND CHARLES & ESTELL-ANN HENDERSON SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who is majoring in liberal arts, who has taken a minimum of 30 credit hours, has an academic GPA of at least 3.0, and who has financial need.
The ELIZABETH HENDERSON SHRUM BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a matriculated student in a Bachelor Degree program with a major in a business area. The recipient shall have a GPA of at least 2.5, have taken 30 credits and have financial need.
The ELIZABETH STURTEVANT GORVINE SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides for a scholarship to be awarded to a graduate of UMF who is pursuing graduate study in the field of home economics including , but not limited to, home economics education and/or administration; education, with a concentration in home economics; occupational and vocational education; nutrition and dietetics; child development and family relations; textiles, apparel, and design; housing and home management; consumer studies. Contact the UMF Ferro Alumni Center directly if you are interested.
The ELSIE C. GROTE SCHOLARSHIPS recipients shall be full-time junior or senior female students, of meritorious academic standing, with preference given to those who have exhibited proficiency in one of the creative arts. Contact the Visual and Performing Arts department.
The EMMA MARIE MAHONEY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one, or not more than three, women students at UMF preparing to teach in Maine elementary schools. Preference is to be given to women who graduated from Somerset County, Maine, high schools.
The ERMO HOUSTON SCOTT SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student majoring in education, who is in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance.
The FLORA ELLA DEANE WEEKS ?04 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to one or more students majoring in art and who has financial need.
The FRANCES VOTER STEARNS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to worthy students from Franklin County, with preference given to students from New Vineyard.
The fund shall be awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in Early Childhood Education. The recipient shall have earned at least a 3.0 GPA, or if an entering first-year student, have graduated in the top 25% of his/her class. The scholarship is renewable subject ot continued availability of funding and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 Prefrerence shall be given to a first-generation college student who has financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by UMF's Admissions Department.
The GENEVA M. SMITH FUND is to be awarded to two students in good academic standing (at least 3.0 G.P.A.).
The GEORGE A. STANDISH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one or more graduates of Gardiner Area High School who are in good academic standing and who demonstrates financial need. In the event that there are no qualified recipients in any year from Gardiner Area High School, the income shall be accumulated and added to principal.
The GERMAINE LECLERC WARMKE SCHOLARSHIP is to be awarded to a student who has graduated from a Maine high school, who is or will be enrolled in teacher education at UMF, who shows enthusiasm about teaching, and who has financial need.
The GLADYS F. TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to one junior and one senior student who are preparing to work with preschool children, families, the elderly, or in the fields of nutrition, health education, or family services. Preference to be given to students in early childhood education or nutrition. Recipients must be in good academic standing and exhibit financial need. Junior recipients may reapply as seniors and shall be given preference provided they have maintained good academic standing. If sufficient funds are not available for two full scholarships, then the full scholarship shall be awarded to a senior and the balance available to a junior.
The GORDON WOOD JENKINS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a deserving student with financial need and good academic standing following completion of a successful semester.
The GOVERNOR JAMES B. LONGLEY SCHOLARSHIPS are continuing awards given to upperclass students who were born in Maine or graduated from a Maine high school, and who demonstrate persistence, determination, compassion and respect for others. Service to family, school (excluding athletic ability or participation), community, and academic performance are also to be considered. Recipients are to be known as Governor Longley Scholars. Preference given to students majoring in special education. Faculty in the Department of Special Education to be consulted.
The GRACE BERRY GENTHNER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF senior or junior majoring in early childhood education who is a resident of the State of Maine, in good academic standing, and in need of financial assistance.
The GRACE STONE ALLEN AWARD is awarded to an elementary education student of meritorious scholarship who has displayed evidence of unusual concern for, and rapport with, children of elementary school age, and who is earning at least part of his/her expenses.
The GWILYM R.ROBERTS STUDY ABROAD FUND is awarded to students who have been accepted into a study abroad program, exhibit financial need and have a strong academic standing. Selection is made by the UMF Study Abroad Committee. Applications for this scholarship are included in the study abroad application packet.
The HARRIET SCHROEDER LANCASTER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and, foremost, who has financial need.
The HARRY A. FURBISH TRUST FUND provides an award based on financial need, with preference given to residents of Rangeley, Maine.
HARVEY AFT CHEMISTRY AWARD: is awarded annually for excellence in chemistry. Excellence in chemistry will be evaluated from grades in chemistry courses, general scholarship, demonstrated interest in chemistry, attitude towards the field, or other criteria the chemistry faculty deems appropriate at the time. Recipients should have preferably three one-year chemistry courses with laboratory (one first year course and two upper level courses*). At the discretion of the chemistry faculty, exceptional students with two years of chemistry courses with laboratory or 6 semester-courses with laboratory will be considered. *Upper level classes should have been taken at UMF.
The HAYES FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to one or more UMF students who are Maine residents, have completed a minimum of 24 credits, are in good academic standing, and have financial need. The award shall not exceed full tuition. Selection is made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The HAZEL C. AND HENRY B. WALKER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one or more deserving students who have been residents of Farmington, Maine for a significant period of time (normally not less than five years) prior to enrolling at UMF. Former recipients of this award in good academic standing may also apply.
The HELEN E. LOCKWOOD SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student majoring in early childhood education or a home economics related program; academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
The HERMIA TOOTHAKER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a promising student majoring in Elementary Education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need.
The HERVEY A. HANSCOM SCHOLARSHIP FUND shall be used to provide scholarships for tuition, fees and books to students with demonstrated need from York County, with preference given to students from Sanford and Lebanon, including graduates of the Maine Technical College System. Recipients must be enrolled at one of the University of Maine System campuses or centers, in a curriculum leading to a degree in liberal arts or in a program comprised of sufficient courses to qualify for a liberal arts degree, even if the degree obtained is in another area. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Student Financial Services Office. The fund shall be administered by the Chancellor.
The HILDA BARSTOW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded on the basis of academic standing and financial need to an older part-time or full-time student enrolled in a degree program.
The IRENE ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one or more UMF students from out-of-state who have completed a minimum of 30 credits. The award shall not exceed full tuition.
The J. ANTHONY McLAUGHLIN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has earned 40 credits with a minimum accumulative G.P.A. of 3.0. The recipient will have made significant contributions to the UMF community in extracurricular activities.
The JENNIE YOUNG RHODES SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a deserving UMF student, with academic standing after completion of one semester being considered.
The JESSICA LYNN SIMCOCK, CLASS OF 1994, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student majoring in the Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Rehabilitation Services, who is a Maine resident, has demonstrated commitment to and extraordinary promise for a career of helping others, has taken at least 60 credits and has financial need.
The JESSIE E. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP is to be awarded to a student in good academic standing (at least 3.0 G.P.A.) and also in need of financial assistance.
The JILL SCHWAB LEADERSHIP AWARD is awarded annually to a full-time UMF student with an accumulative GPA of at least 2.0, who is not a senior, and who has made significant contributions to UMF and/or the community, excluding athletic ability or participation.
The JOAN R. VERRILL SCHOLARSHIP will be given to a current student with preference to one who plans to teach and who has financial need.
JOHN A. ('39) AND JOSEE D. ALIBERTI FUND: Income to be awarded annually to a Maine resident who has taken at least 30 credit hours at UMF, who also is in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee after which they shall notify UMF's Alumni Director The fund shall be administered by UMF's Vice President for Administration.
The JOHN CARNIE AWARD provides a scholarship on the basis of contribution to UMF campus life, financial need, academic achievement and contribution, excluding athletic ability or participation.
The JOHN E. AND LENORE T. BINGLEY SCHOLARSHIP is to be awarded annually to an entering UMF freshman from Mount Abram High School. Criteria--high academic average and unusual interest/achievement in either history, literature, art or music. Selection made by Mount Abram High School Principal.
The Justin A. Maurer Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in the Bachelor of Science Program in Community Health who has earned a minimum of 60 credits. The current recipient shall receive preference subject to continuance in the program.
The James I. & Elizabeth B. Couser Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded to a UMF student majoring in math.
The John A. '39 and Josee D. Aliberti Scholrship is awarded to a resident of Lewiston, who was also a graduate of either Lewiston High School or St. Dominic's Regional High School. The award will be made exclusively to a member of the senior class at UMF. The amount of the award will be given at the beginning of the spring semester
The KERRY D. MARTIN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to UMF students who are Maine residents majoring in elementary education, who have attained junior or senior status, who are in good academic standing, and who have financial need. Preference to be given to a male candidate who is also a graduate of SAD 48 (Nokomis) or SAD 53 (Pittsfield).
The KEVIN ZEBROWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP shall be awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in rehabilitation services or who has completed one year in the Ski Industries program. The recipient must have a GPA of at least 3.0, have taken at least 30 credits, have made significant contributions to community service and have demonstrated financial need.
The LAWRENCE (BUZZ) WARREN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who is majoring in history or interdisciplinary-political science/social science, and who is in good academic standing.
The LAWRENCE E. STANDISH FUND is administered by Key Trust Company which is Trustee and Executor. The fund will be used to award one year tuition (18 credits), room, and board scholarships to intellectually gifted and academically superior UMF senior students who have resided in Maine for at least six consecutive years and who have received full acceptance and admission to a Master's degree program at the University of Maine, Orono. This scholarship is effective the following academic year commencing in the Fall otherwise the scholarship must be forfeited. Scholarship amount to be paid directly to the University of Maine, Orono, by Key Trust Corp. after the recipient has been matriculated into the master's degree program. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the UMF Scholarship Committee and recommended to Key Trust Company.
LEONA COY RICHARDS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in elementary education with demonstrated interest in early childhood education. The recipient shall have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours, be in good academic standing, and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students from Piscataquis County.
The LEONARD KNOWLES BROOKS ?58 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student majoring in elementary education, who has taken at least 30 credits and has financial need.
The LINNIE P. HILLS FUND provides an award to students on the basis of meritorious academic work after completion of a successful semester and/or financial need.
The LOUISE EMERSON SHENKEL '57 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to one or more students who is a Maine resident, is majoring in Elementary Education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need. The recipient(s) of the scholarship may reapply in subsequent years. The amount of the award(s) is not to exceed a recipients' tuition with preference given to covering full tuition. If sufficient funds are available for more than one student, the balance shall be awarded as per the terms of the fund.
The LTK GEOLOGY FIELD TRIP ENDOWMENT FUND is awarded to enrich the lives of UMF students who choose to enroll in various geology field trip courses offered by UMF and who are deemed worthy of financial assistance by the UMF geology faculty. Contact the Natural Sciences department for more information.
The LUCILLE FINLEY PORTER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a meritorious student enrolled in education or making application to enroll in education at UMF with the intent of entering the teaching profession. Only students residing in School Administrative District #9 are eligible with preference, if necessary, to go to a student from New Sharon.
The LUCINDA PREBLE AWARD is made to men who have attended UMF for three semesters, with consideration given to academic standing and participation in and responsibility for college activities, excluding athletic ability or participation.
The MARCIA SAVAGE BROWN SCHOLARSHIP FUND shall be used for full tuition scholarships for students in need at the University of Maine at Farmington.
The MARGARET R. COBBAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides a scholarship of at least $1,000 to be awarded to a full-time student majoring in elementary education and entering his/her sophomore, junior or senior year, based upon academic achievement, demonstrated commitment to the field of elementary education, and potential leadership excluding athletic ability or participation.
The MARION C. RICKER SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to seniors at UMF who are Maine residents and who plan to teach early childhood education or home economics related subjects. Academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
The MARK BARTHOLOMEW INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student traveling overseas as a part of one of UMF's international exchange programs. Selection is made by the UMF International Studies Committee and is based on financial need and academic standing of at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications for this scholarship are included in the study abroad application packet.
The MARY CATHERINE SCHNEIDER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a junior or senior woman who resides in a residence hall, and who serves or has served as a Resident Assistant or Head Resident, is in good academic standing, has been active in at least one student organization/group (excluding athletic ability or participation), and who shows evident concern for her fellow students and people in general. Residence Life professional staff members to be consulted regarding recipient.
The MARY PHILPOT WHITTEMORE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student from Maine majoring in elementary education. The recipient shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need.
The MASSACHUSETTS ALUMNI CHAPTER CAROLYN A. STONE AWARD is made to a UMF junior or senior who is a native of Massachusetts, and who has demonstrated the ability, character, and seriousness of purpose necessary to a successful teaching career.
The MAUDE L. PARKS AWARD is given to a junior student at UMF demonstrating excellence in communication arts in the field of English. Selection is made by the English faculty.
The MILDRED DOLLOFF MASTERMAN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has taken at least 30 credit hours, who has a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, who is in need of financial assistance, and who is a resident of Androscoggin or Franklin County in Maine.
The MILLARD S. PARLIN, SR. AND ALVERNA W. PARLIN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education. The recipient shall have completed a minimum of 15 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The MISSION AT THE EASTWARD (MATE) SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded on the basis of financial need to UMF students who are residents of Androscoggin, Franklin, Oxford or Somerset Counties, Maine.
The MYRON E. STARBIRD AWARD is open to graduating seniors who have excelled in the field of geography. Selection to be made by the UMF geography faculty.
The NETTIE TAYLOR MOSHER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to Maine residents majoring in elementary or special education at UMF, based on high academic standing after completion of a successful semester.
The NICHOLAS M. AND JEAN M. NAPPI SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who is a graduate of a Maine high school in the upper 50% of his/her graduating class and in good academic standing at UMF. Students of Italian descent are encouraged to apply.
The PARSONS-WHITTEN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to one or more UMF students preferably from the New Portland-Kingfield, ME area.
The PATRICIA CRAIG NICKERSON '59 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a promising student majoring in Education, in good academic standing and having financial need.
The R. LEON AND ALMA C. WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to deserving and needy UMF undergraduate students of good citizenship who are graduates of SAD 63, comprising Amherst, Aurora, Plantation #33, Osborne Plantation, Eddington, Holden, and Clifton, and who are residents of the towns of Clifton, Holden, or Eddington. Selection shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee preferably in consultation with the local school authorities stated above.
The ROSS E. FEARON SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to one or more seniors of UMF majoring in special education with an accumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher who have been accepted into a graduate program leading to an advanced degree in the field of Exceptionalities, including but not limited to Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance, Learning Disabilities, Speech Pathology and Gifted/Talented. Priority shall be given to prospective full-time graduate students with limited financial support who were non-traditional students during their undergraduate years.
The ROWENA TITCOMB CRAMER SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides a scholarship to a promising junior or senior majoring in elementary education, in good academic standing and having financial need.
The RUTH WEBBER McGARY (CLASS OF 1950) SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student from Maine majoring in education who has an excellent G.P.A. and, foremost, who has significant financial need. Preference shall be given to first generation college students.
The SUMNER P. AND FLORA A.M. MILLS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS recognize students who have given their time to improve the quality of life for community residents. These scholarships are awarded to UMF students with preference given to Farmington region residents. This is a $500 award (minimum). To qualify for this award, one must have attained a 2.5 GPA, performed 85 hours of volunteer community service within a continuous 9 month period within the last year, and have done the volunteer work in the Farmington area. The Sadie Redding D'Aiutolo Scholarship Fund is awarded to a Maine resident majoring in elementary education and entering his/her senior year. The student must have demonstrated financial need, have attended UMF for at least one year and be in good academic standing.
The Angela Pelletier (2006) Scholarship Fund shall be used annually to support a second, third, or fourth year student pursuing a degree in education who is a graduate of Biddeford High School or resident of York County, should no eligible Biddeford High School graduate apply.
The ARDITH POTTER StJOHN '52 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who is majoring in education or counseling, who has financial need and who has at least a 3.0 G.P.A., or in the case of a first-year student, at least a B average in high school. Preference shall be given to a female student.
The Bell-Marin Geology Field Study fund shall be awarded annually to UMF students who have registered for geology field trips and who have submitted an essay to the Geology Department explaining in detail why they feel qualified to earn this award and to explain what they anticipate gaining from their field experience.
THE DR. C. LARRY STINCHCOMB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student enrolled in the Program of Basic Studies (PBS) or to a former Upward Bound (UB) student, who is a Maine resident, has taken at least 30 credits and has financial need.
The HORIZON SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student, either incoming or current, who exhibits great financial need and who has achieved good academic standing. Renewable each year with preference given to the current recipient upon his/her maintaining good academic standing.
The Justin A. Maurer Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in the Bachelor of Science Program in Community Health who has earned a minimum of 60 credits. The current recipient shall receive preference subject to continuance in the program.
THE KATIE J. ARSENAULT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education who has earned a minimum of 30 credits. The recipient shall express an interest in becoming bilingual and/or in traveling internationally.
The Leta Wentworth '37 Scholarship was established at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2008 on behalf of the UMF Alumni Foundation with a bequest from the estate of Leta Wentworth, Class of 1937. The income from the fund shall be used annually to support one or more UMF students who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing, and who has financial need.
The MILLS INTERNSHIP AWARD FOR SCIENCE STUDY is awarded to support student internships for UMF students studying science topics that advance the understanding of biology or related aspects of human life. The income from the fund shall be used to pay a stipend to the student or to the institution providing the internship or both. The award shall be made every two years to a student enrolled in an internship during a summer or fall or spring semester or May term and who has been selected by the science faculty. The ROGER GRINDLE AWARD is awarded annually to an outstanding history student thereby encouraging academic excellence in the field of history. Faculty in the History Department to be consulted.
The Don Wardwell Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a graduate from any Maine high school with preference given to graduates of Bucksport High School or Averill High School at Goodwill Hinckley. This scholarship is renewable subject to continued availability of funding and maintaing of good academic standing.
The Priscilla Noddin Scholarship shall be awarded annually to one or more UMF students who demonstrate financial need and high academic achievement.
The VERA MacBEAN KAULBACK (CLASS OF 1940) SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education, who has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours, and who has financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The WENDALL H. TOWLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has earned a minimum of 30 credit hours and has at least a 3.2 G.P.A.
The WOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Income from the fund shall be awarded annually to no more than four (4) UMF students who graduated from Mt. Abram High School located in Salem, Maine. The recipient(s) shall have earned at least 15 credits and have financial need. Should there be no financially deserving graduates of Mt. Abram High School in any academic year, such year's annual income shall be paid over the corpus of said scholarship fund to become a part thereof. Distribution from this fund shall be credited to each recipient's account for tuition, board and room, student activity fees, books and other direct expenses incurred at UMF.
The AL MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND is to be awarded to a graduating senior who has shown excellence in the field of geography. Selection to be made by the geography faculty.
The ALICE MILLER JOHNSON (CLASS OF 1939) SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in education. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The ALICE RICHARDSON DURGIN '37 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student who has taken at least 30 credits, has a G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and has financial need. Preference shall be given to a student with a music minor.
The ANNA A. SMALL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to UMF seniors majoring in special education for children with behavioral disorders. Academic standing after completion of one semester is considered.
The ANNE MARIE TESSIER SCHOLARSHIP shall be awarded annually to a graduate of a high school in Jay or Livermore Falls, Maine. The recipient shall have achieved high academic standing and have financial need. Preference shall be given to new, first-year, or in-coming transfer students who meet the above criteria.
The Arthur A. and Euleta Rand Webb 1935 Scholarship shall be awarded annually to one or more UMF students who is a Maine resident, is majoring in elementary education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing, and has financial need. Preference shall be given to residents of Washington County, Maine.
The ATON HYLTON MEMORIAL FUND is used to make an annual award of up to three hundred dollars ($300) to a UMF student majoring in creative writing and taking a semester abroad at any of UMF's established exchange sites. The student would have to demonstrate need; high academic standing would not be a requirement. Selection is made by the UMF International Studies Committee. Applications for this scholarship are included in the study abroad application packet.
The Anne E. Mullin Scholarship shall be awarded to a student who is 25 years or older and who will have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours by the time the scholarship money is dispersed. Selectioin is based on academic record, career golas, and demonstrated leadership (on campus and/or in the community).
The BATH IRON WORKS (BIW) SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a meritorious or needy student, or students, with preference given to BIW employees or children of BIW employees. Contact the Financial Aid Office directly if you are interested.
The BETA GAMMA CHAPTER OF PHI SIGMA Pl SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student with a GPA of 3.0 or better and who, through the student's response to a personal essay in the application process, demonstrates knowledge, fellowship and leadership, excluding athletic ability or participation. When all else is judged equal, preference to be given to academic standing rather than need.
The BRANDON A. AND JEAN MacPHERSON MATHESON SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student from Maine majoring in education. The recipient shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students from SAD #47 who have graduated from Messalonskee High School.
The Beatrice Hudon MacInnes Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is a Maine resident majoring in elementary education. Preference shall be given to a disabled person.
The CANDANCE JOHNSON VINETTE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student(s) for the senior year of study in either an associate or baccalaureate program. The student must have demonstrated financial need, have attended UMF for at least one year, be in good academic standing, and not have earned a prior baccalaureate degree. Preference to students with evidence of leadership and service to others. Selection of recipients to be made by the UMF Financial Aid Office which shall administer the fund.
The Carolyn A. Stone Grant-in-Aid Fund shall be used to make an award to a UMF student majoring in education who is from Maine. The recipient shall have earned a minimum of 32 credits. Preference shall be given to female students.
The CHARLES L. LEAVITT SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who has earned at least 30 credits, has financial need and who is involved with UMF theatre.
The CLAYTON REED AWARD shall be given to a UMF student who is student teaching. Preference shall be given to students with financial need.
The CLIFFORD OLIVER AWARD is given to a full-time mathematics major at UMF who has completed 24 credit hours in the major, earning at least 9 at UMF. Academic standing after successful semester is considered. Contact the Mathematics and Computer Science department.
The DAR SCHOLARSHIP is provided by the Farmington area Colonial Daughters Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The scholarship is to be awarded to an upperclassman pursuing a degree in education. The student must be a resident of Franklin County.
The DAVID SHERMAN BEACH, JR. & JANIE LOCKHART BEACH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing and have financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The DOC & TOBY DES ROCHES SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is awarded annually to matriculated students in the Ski Industry Program showing evidence of initiative, personal presence and excellence in the program, and who bring credit to UMF. Selection is made by the Ski Industries Committee.
The DORIS FRANCES LAKE SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to outstanding matriculated freshmen students enrolled in early childhood education or a home economics related program, who show evidence of academic achievement, scholarly potential and qualities of leadership, excluding athletic ability or participation. Upperclass students in the aforementioned programs who maintain academic honors may also apply, with preference given to sophomores.
The DORIS HOLBROOK WARREN ALLEN '33 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a graduate of Brunswick High School who demonstrates financial need. Recipients of the scholarship must be in good academic standing. In the event there are no qualified recipients in any year from Brunswick High School, the income may be granted to a graduate of Mount Ararat High School under the same guidelines as set forth above.
The DR. EDWARD S. AND BARBARA DICKEY AMBROSE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student, or students, majoring in education. The recipient(s) shall have earned at least 30 credits, be in good academic standing, and have financial need. Preference shall be given to students born in the State of Maine and graduated from a public school of secondary education in the State of Maine.
The Dr. Peter H. Williams Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a UMF student who is an education major, either elementary or secondary, with a concentration in math. The recipient shall have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.8 and have proven to be hard-working, goal-oriented, and of exemplary character. The scholarship shall be renewable upon the student's maintaining the above stated GPA. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee upon consultation with UMF's math department.

The DR. JOHN H. ROMAN LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a UMF student who has demonstrated a passion for leadership and the qualities of a leader in any one of the numerous clubs or organizations that are funded by the Student Activity Fee. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Student Senate Advisor in consultation with the student Senate Scholarship Committee. HAZEL ANNE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has attended UMF for at least two semesters with meritorious academic achievement and demonstrated service to the campus community by active participation in one or more organizations and activities (excluding athletic ability or participation); preferably a student entering his/her junior or senior year.
The E. Irene Allen and Frances Allen Black Scholarship shall be awarded annually to enrolled out of state students who have completed one year at UMF, and who are in need of financial assistance.
The E. MUNROE (CLASS OF 1941) & JUANITA HAWKINS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a non-traditional UMF student with financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The EDITH L. GREENE SCHOLARSHIPS are renewable scholarships made on the basis of meritorious academic work and/or financial need. Preference is given to residents of Wilton, Maine and secondly to residents of other locations in Franklin County, Maine.
The EDITH MAXWELL THORNQUIST SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a women who is currently a junior and a native of Maine, who is preparing for a teaching career. Academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
The EDMUND D. CURRIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides a scholarship award to an elementary education student who is a Maine resident, who has attended UMF on a full-time basis for at least two years, who has completed all course work except for student teaching, and who is a traditional age student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; preference to be given to a student who also has a demonstrated financial need.
The EDNA HIGGINS FUND provides scholarship awards for students at all UM campuses, with preference given to students from the Greater Portland area (Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough).
The EINAR A. OLSEN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a full-time student majoring in Health Education, who is entering his/her junior or senior year, has financial need, and has contributed to college and community life, excluding athletic ability or participation.
The ELDRED (RED) ROLFE AWARD is given to a graduating senior who has shown excellence in the field of geography. Selection is to be made by the geography faculty.
The ELEANOR WOOD SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to an outstanding junior or senior English major (either in arts and sciences, or secondary education) who has been a student at UMF during both his/her freshman and sophomore years. To be based on academic achievement in the field of English. Recipients must be of good character, in good academic standing, and must have demonstrated high academic achievement in all English courses. Nominations may be made by English faculty who have had the student at least one course and/or by academic administrators, but the recipient will be selected by the Scholarship Committee based on review of the student's academic records. No other factors such as financial need, extra-curricular activities or other scholarships/awards received, will be considered.
The ELIZABETH '32 & RALPH SHRUM, GERTRUDE MEADE, HAZEN HENDERSON & MARY ARMSTRONG SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need.

The ELIZABETH STURTEVANT GORVINE SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides for a scholarship to be awarded to a graduate of UMF who is pursuing graduate study in the field of home economics including , but not limited to, home economics education and/or administration; education, with a concentration in home economics; occupational and vocational education; nutrition and dietetics; child development and family relations; textiles, apparel, and design; housing and home management; consumer studies. The FRANCES VOTER STEARNS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to worthy students from Franklin County, with preference given to students from New Vineyard.
The fund shall be awarded annually to a UMF student majoring in Early Childhood Education. The recipient shall have earned at least a 3.0 GPA, or if an entering first-year student, have graduated in the top 25% of his/her class. The scholarship is renewable subject ot continued availability of funding and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 Prefrerence shall be given to a first-generation college student who has financial need. Selection of the recipient shall be made by UMF's Admissions Department.
The GENEVA M. SMITH FUND is to be awarded to two students in good academic standing (at least 3.0 G.P.A.).
The GEORGE A. STANDISH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one or more graduates of Gardiner Area High School who are in good academic standing and who demonstrates financial need. In the event that there are no qualified recipients in any year from Gardiner Area High School, the income shall be accumulated and added to principal.
The GERMAINE LECLERC WARMKE SCHOLARSHIP is to be awarded to a student who has graduated from a Maine high school, who is or will be enrolled in teacher education at UMF, who shows enthusiasm about teaching, and who has financial need.
The GLADYS F. TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to one junior and one senior student who are preparing to work with preschool children, families, the elderly, or in the fields of nutrition, health education, or family services. Preference to be given to students in early childhood education or nutrition. Recipients must be in good academic standing and exhibit financial need. Junior recipients may reapply as seniors and shall be given preference provided they have maintained good academic standing. If sufficient funds are not available for two full scholarships, then the full scholarship shall be awarded to a senior and the balance available to a junior.
The GORDON WOOD JENKINS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a deserving student with financial need and good academic standing following completion of a successful semester.
The GOVERNOR JAMES B. LONGLEY SCHOLARSHIPS are continuing awards given to upperclass students who were born in Maine or graduated from a Maine high school, and who demonstrate persistence, determination, compassion and respect for others. Service to family, school (excluding athletic ability or participation), community, and academic performance are also to be considered. Recipients are to be known as Governor Longley Scholars. Preference given to students majoring in special education. Faculty in the Department of Special Education to be consulted.
The GRACE BERRY GENTHNER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF senior or junior majoring in early childhood education who is a resident of the State of Maine, in good academic standing, and in need of financial assistance.
The GRACE STONE ALLEN AWARD is awarded to an elementary education student of meritorious scholarship who has displayed evidence of unusual concern for, and rapport with, children of elementary school age, and who is earning at least part of his/her expenses.
The GWILYM R.ROBERTS STUDY ABROAD FUND is awarded to students who have been accepted into a study abroad program, exhibit financial need and have a strong academic standing. Selection is made by the UMF Study Abroad Committee. Applications for this scholarship are included in the study abroad application packet.
The HARRIET SCHROEDER LANCASTER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has earned at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and, foremost, who has financial need.
The HARRY A. FURBISH TRUST FUND provides an award based on financial need, with preference given to residents of Rangeley, Maine.
HARVEY AFT CHEMISTRY AWARD: is awarded annually for excellence in chemistry. Excellence in chemistry will be evaluated from grades in chemistry courses, general scholarship, demonstrated interest in chemistry, attitude towards the field, or other criteria the chemistry faculty deems appropriate at the time. Recipients should have preferably three one-year chemistry courses with laboratory (one first year course and two upper level courses*). At the discretion of the chemistry faculty, exceptional students with two years of chemistry courses with laboratory or 6 semester-courses with laboratory will be considered. *Upper level classes should have been taken at UMF.
The HAYES FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to one or more UMF students who are Maine residents, have completed a minimum of 24 credits, are in good academic standing, and have financial need. The award shall not exceed full tuition. Selection is made by the UMF Scholarship Committee.
The HAZEL C. AND HENRY B. WALKER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one or more deserving students who have been residents of Farmington, Maine for a significant period of time (normally not less than five years) prior to enrolling at UMF. Former recipients of this award in good academic standing may also apply.
The HELEN E. LOCKWOOD SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student majoring in early childhood education or a home economics related program; academic standing after completion of a successful semester is considered.
The HERMIA TOOTHAKER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a promising student majoring in Elementary Education, who has taken at least 30 credits, is in good academic standing and has financial need.
The HERVEY A. HANSCOM SCHOLARSHIP FUND shall be used to provide scholarships for tuition, fees and books to students with demonstrated need from York County, with preference given to students from Sanford and Lebanon, including graduates of the Maine Technical College System. Recipients must be enrolled at one of the University of Maine System campuses or centers, in a curriculum leading to a degree in liberal arts or in a program comprised of sufficient courses to qualify for a liberal arts degree, even if the degree obtained is in another area. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Student Financial Services Office. The fund shall be administered by the Chancellor.
The HILDA BARSTOW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded on the basis of academic standing and financial need to an older part-time or full-time student enrolled in a degree program.
The IRENE ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to one or more UMF students from out-of-state who have completed a minimum of 30 credits. The award shall not exceed full tuition.
The J. ANTHONY McLAUGHLIN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a UMF student who has earned 40 credits with a minimum accumulative G.P.A. of 3.0. The recipient will have made significant contributions to the UMF community in extracurricular activities.
The JENNIE YOUNG RHODES SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a deserving UMF student, with academic standing after completion of one semester being considered.
