Yes, UMF Offers Merit Based Scholarships
Approximately 90% of all full-time, degree-seeking University of Maine at Farmington students receive some form of financial assistance: scholarships, federal aid, merit scholarships, loans, institutional aid, student employment, etc.

While the vast majority of our institutional grant aid (totaling more than $2.9 million in academic year 2011-2012) is awarded to meet the demonstrated financial need of our students, UMF also awards merit scholarships that are not based on demonstrated financial need.

Below Are Merit-based Awards Available to New, First-year Students

UMF Stevens Scholarship (NEW)
A new academic scholarship for students from Maine worth $3,000 per year, this is a competitive scholarship to be awarded to Maine first-year applicants with the best grades in challenging academic programs through their junior year.

We anticipate awarding this new scholarship, worth $12,000 over four years, to at least 80 of the best academically qualified applicants admitted from Maine.

The scholarship is named for UMF alumnus John F. Stevens, Chief Engineer of the Panama Canal. Stevens, who became a school teacher soon after leaving UMF, combined his affinity for mathematics and surveying with a passion for learning and spirit of adventure. Like many liberal arts students, he chose to follow his curiosity. Stevens went on to study civil engineering, building bridges, tunnels and most notably railroads. His railroad expertise brought Stevens to the attention of President Roosevelt, who hired him in 1905 to take over construction of the Panama Canal.

No additional application is required for this scholarship.

Renewable for up to a total of eight semesters of study, provided the renewal requirements, including a semester G.P.A. of 3.00 and enrollment in 12 credit hours per semester, are met.
