Outside Scholarships
Private groups and organizations sometimes offer scholarships. Students are encouraged to apply for as many outside scholarships as possible. Students are responsible for reporting, in writing, to the UMF Financial Aid Office any outside scholarships they receive. Receipt of outside aid may have an effect on financial aid already awarded. The UMF Financial Aid Office receives notifications of scholarships from certain agencies.

We also recommend students conduct their own scholarship searches. There are a number of free scholarship searches, and many of them now use the Internet as their main gateway for sharing information. Two of the most popular searches are fastWeb and Mach25. Two local organizations that offer scholarships and scholarship information are The Finance Authority of Maine and Maine Education Services. Contact the UMF Financial Aid Office for details.

Veterans Benefits
Veterans Benefits at UMF are approved by the Veterans Administration for the education and training of veterans, servicepersons, and dependents of disabled and deceased veterans. Students who expect to receive benefits should contact the nearest VA regional office for information concerning eligibility, counseling, and benefits. Once admitted, new students should advise the Registrar’s Office they wish to be certified for VA benefits. Contact the UMF Financial Aid Office for details.

Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits
UMF is approved for student benefits through the Maine Rehabilitation Commission. Applicants for Maine Vocational Rehabilitation educational benefits must also apply for and be eligible for financial aid. Contact the UMF Financial Aid Office for details.

For Returning Students

The University of Maine at Farmington has a number of scholarships that recognize students' academic and other achievements. Current students may apply for these scholarships by completing a form on our internal Web site (myCampus) in late fall. On this form, they can designate the funds for which they are applying and submit the application electronically to the faculty Academic Scholarship Committee. (Note that academic scholarship applications are separate from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.)

UMF’s restricted academic awards are generally merit-based and are targeted primarily toward returning UMF students who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement. The application deadline is usually early in January. Contact the UMF Financial Aid Office for details.
