First-Year Students (freshmen)
Each year the University of Maine at Farmington receives applications from prospective First-Year students (freshmen) from every county in Maine and from across New England, New York and New Jersey; from coast-to-coast and around the world.

Because we limit our total enrollment to just 2,000 full-time students, and some of our majors are in such high demand, admission to the University of Maine at Farmington is competitive. The grid below provides the admission plans and dates for applying to Farmington.

Consideration for Admission
As an applicant to Farmington, we recommend you pursue a challenging college preparatory curriculum offered by your high school. AP and honors courses are encouraged. In addition to your academic achievement, your application essay, high school recommendation(s), and participation in extra-curricular activities also are considered.
College preparatory courses required for consideration:
- English: 4 years
- Mathematics (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry): 3 years
- Sciences: 3 years with at least 2 years of lab science (Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics)
- Social Studies: 2 years
- Foreign Language: 2 years
Ability to Succeed
We believe that your ability to succeed at Farmington can best be determined by considering the rigor of your high school curriculum, grade performance and trend, and achievements both inside and outside of school. SAT scores are not required.
Creative Writing Applicants
Applicants intending to major in Farmington's Creative Writing major must submit 10-12 pages of their own written work. We recommend including excerpts or samples of your work in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
Home-Schooled Applicants:
We welcome students who have been homeschooled to apply for admission to Farmington. An official score report from the GED is required.
Step-by-Step Guide for Applying
- Complete your application for admission (paper form or online) and application and essay. Our application fee is $40 (non-refundable) payable to The University of Maine at Farmington. Farmington also takes applications through the Common Application, Universal College Application, and the University of Maine System.
- Request your high school mail an official high school transcript.
- Have your guidance counselor or a teacher include a recommendation(s).
- Complete the front side of the Request for Academic Records and give it to your guidance counselor for completion of the reverse side.
