A bit about UMaine Farmington

Established in 1864 as Maine's first public institution of higher education, with historic and continued strength in teacher education, the University of Maine at Farmington offers undergraduate programs in arts and sciences, teacher education, and human services.

In recognition of its quality, the University has earned a national reputation for excellence. In fact, in its 2007 guide, U.S.News & World Report named the University of Maine at Farmington "One of America's Best Colleges" for the tenth consecutive year (1998-2007). We’re the only college of our kind in New England to receive that distinction.

The town of Farmington (pop. 7,500) is located at the foothills of the mountains in western Maine and the area offers superb hiking, biking, skiing, boating and snowmobiling, as well as scenic mountain vistas, sparkling lakes and streams, and unrivaled fall foliage. UMF was named by Fly Rod & Reel magazine as one of the Top Ten colleges in the nation for fishing - the only school in Maine to make the list.

Perhaps more significantly, the University of Maine at Farmington is also one of just 20 colleges and universities across the nation featured in Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter. The book identifies schools that serve as models of educational effectiveness.

The state capital, Augusta, is 45 minutes away; twin cities Lewiston-Auburn about 45 minutes; Maine's largest city, Portland, 1.5 hours; and Boston and Quebec City are each a 3.5 hour drive. Maine's seacoast -- famed for its rugged beauty and delicious seafood -- is just 90 minutes away.

Major ski resorts are nearby, too: Sugarloaf/USA is just a 40 minute drive from campus, Sunday River about 50 minutes and Saddleback Mountain in Rangely 50 minutes.

The Farmington area is rich in cultural offerings and recreational opportunities. The natural beauty of its mountains, lakes, woods, and streams draws countless tourists to the region, which is also noted for snow, blackflies, and April mud season.

We are implementing an action plan to provide a deeper understanding of diversity. Applications are encouraged from women and minorities and others who can help us achieve it.
