In the Classroom: Engaging Students — Setting High Academic Expectations
Gail Lange believes in getting creative in her computer science courses. In her Network Security class, Gail worked closely with her students to create an online store to serve as a real-life working model. Students developed a classic car database and created separate PHP modules for creating new users.

The class also requires her students to use open-source software such as Nessus and Nmap, to assess software vulnerabilities and to understand how hackers think.

She has her students run the vulnerability tests in the enclosed network, learn how to diagnose software problems, and patch the problems. Gail also works with her students to create blogs and use analyzers to understand network packets. The students conduct the experiments inside the Ethereal system, retrieve data and write the reports. Gail's goal with the class is to have a separate project room available to be used for installing software and network troubleshooting.

Gail's former students are currently enjoying successful careers in the computer science field and are acting as administrators for databases, network security systems, and Internet technology with the Peace Corps.
