Business & Administration
The University of Maine at Farmington's Business and Administration cluster includes our successful Business Economics major plus innovative Interdisciplinary Studies concentrations in: Business Psychology, Health Information Systems, Outdoor Recreation Business Administration (ORBA), Environmental Policy & Planning.
One of the many things that make our Business and Administration offerings of such high quality is the fact that in nearly every case, students have the opportunity to practice in the field what they’ve learned in the classroom. Through internships and other learning experiences, they gain real-world experience, practical skills and knowledge, and valuable professional contacts.
Business Economics
In Business Economics, students work with area entrepreneurs and present to the class their insight of the unique challenges and rewards of owning and operating a small business. They also participate in outside-the-classroom experiences to help develop others’ businesses. Some Farmington students have even used what they learned and started their own business ventures — while still in college.
Business Psychology
Farmington's interdisciplinary Business Psychology program combines the teaching of psychological dynamics and solid
business practices, allowing you to become effective and savvy businessperson in today's global market. Business
Psychology helps you to gain a deeper knowledge of human behavior — which in turn allows you to better
understand what motivates people to buy products and services.
Health Information Systems
Offered jointly through the UMF Business Economics, Computer Science, and Community Health Education departments,
the new interdisciplinary concentration in Health Informations Systems combines core courses in all three
academic areas, plus new courses that have been developed specifically for this innovative program. UMF developed
the interdisciplinary Health Information Systems concentration with guidance from industry leaders and state
partners, who have been instrumental in directing the program content, carefully tailoring it to meet skills
needs that exist in this growing field. Health Information Systems is ideal for those who want to work for
state / local public health agencies, managed care organizations, pharmaceutical companies, international
health agencies, federal health programs, physicians / other healthcare providers, or work as IT professionals.
Outdoor Recreation Business Administration (ORBA)
Working closely with our partners in the recreation and tourism industries, we have developed an innovative new
recreation-related interdisciplinary program: Outdoor Recreation Business Administration (ORBA). Offered through
our Business Economics Department, the new interdisciplinary program combines courses in Business plus courses from
Geography and Recreation. The program has a broad four-season focus and an emphasis on business, taking a decidedly
hands-on approach to include internship opportunities that cater to the outdoor recreation segment of the tourism
industry, particularly in western Maine.
Environmental Policy & Planning
Our interdisciplinary Environmental Policy & Planning program combines environmental science classes and policy
classes. Students study things like environmental protection policies and town and municipal planning process —
investigating issues like economic base theory, urban renewal, and regional scale and demography, and more.
