Business & Administration
The University of Maine at Farmington’s Business and Administration area incorporates many different academic and professional areas — most notably our successful Business Economics major. But UMF also offers a number of Business and Administration-focused majors you may not have considered, such as Arts Administration, Rehabilitation Administration, Environmental Planning and Policy, even a Certificate program focusing on Ski Business.

One of the many things that make our Business and Administration programs of such high quality is the fact that in nearly every case, students are required to practice in the field what they’ve learned in the classroom. Through internships and other learning experiences, they gain real-world experience, practical skills and knowledge, and valuable professional contacts.

In Business Economics students work with area entrepreneurs and present to the class their insight of the unique challenges and rewards of owning and operating a small business. They also participate in outside-the-classroom experiences to help develop others’ businesses. Some UMF students have even used what they learned and started their own business ventures, while still students.

Environmental Planning and Policy majors combine environmental science classes and policy classes. They study things like environmental protection policies and town and municipal planning process — investigating issues like economic base theory, urban renewal, and regional scale and demography, and more.

Arts Administration majors study the Arts — but with a keen Business focus: how to manage an art gallery; how to market and promote community theater productions; how to produce music and get involved in music management, and more.

Rehabilitation Administration majors examine all aspects of Rehabilitation Services, but with an emphasis on the administrative aspects of the health and human services fields: how to develop state and federal policies, how to successfully implement and deliver services to local communities and area health service providers, and more.

Social Enterprise deals with important global issues such as economic development, civic engagement, human rights, health, the environment, and education. Those who choose the Social Enterprise major adapt principles from several distinct areas: Entrepreneurship, Nonprofit Administration, Management, Social Activism and Social Accountability and channel them as a way to make positive social change in the world.
