Computer Science and Mathematics
The University of Maine at Farmington’s Computer Science and Mathematics academic cluster area primarily encompasses the academic programs: Computer Science, Mathematics, and Secondary Education - Mathematics. But students in all academic areas — The Arts, Business & Administration, Education, English & Humanities, Health & Human Services, the Sciences, and Social Sciences, will use mathematics and computer skills in their college studies and beyond.

Courses on computer architecture and hardware, data base systems, networking, computer languages, algorithm design and analysis, and computer graphics are put to use as you design independent study projects, pursue internships, or take advantage of on-campus work opportunities, such as working in the campus computer labs.

Farmington students apply their expertise in Computer Science and Mathematics in a number of ways.

Some recently presented their own research on a number of interesting topics such as: Exploration of Real-World Applications of Combinatorics and Graph Theory, Darwinian Cumulative Selection: Identifying the Probabilities, Computer Animation, A Variety of Learning Applications, Using Flash, Geodesic Geometry, Cryptography & Cryptanalysis, Overclocking: Push Your PC to the Edge, Database Mining and its Impact on Marketing, Mathematical Games and Puzzles, and more.

Our Computer Science graduates find work as software developers, data base specialists, network administrators, computer facility managers, and more. Others have successfully gone on to graduate school.

Our Mathematics program is designed to prepare students for graduate study or a career in a mathematical field. The Secondary Education areas prepare students to become Math teachers at the middle school, junior high school and high school level.

Offered jointly through the UMF Computer Science, Business Economics, and Community Health Education departments, the new interdisciplinary concentration in Health Informations Systems combines core courses in all three academic areas, plus new courses that have been developed specifically for this innovative program. UMF developed the interdisciplinary Health Information Systems concentration with guidance from industry leaders and state partners, who have been instrumental in directing the program content, carefully tailoring it to meet skills needs that exist in this growing field. Health Information Systems is ideal for those who want to work for state / local public health agencies, managed care organizations, pharmaceutical companies, international health agencies, federal health programs, physicians / other healthcare providers, or work as IT professionals.
