Pre-Professional Health Careers
In 2010, Dr. David Moker of the the Dept. of Pharmacolgy at the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine and Dr. Amy Davidoff, also of the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine, gave a "White Coat Seminar" presentation to UMF students. Dr. Moker presented on the Development of the Prefrontal Cortext and afterward the two doctors held a Q&A about the University of New England's medical-related professional programs (medicine, physician's assistant, nurse anesthesiology, pharmacy). The White Coat Seminar was part of a guest speaker series sponsored by the UMF Pre-Med program.
In 2010, two recent UMF graduates who are currently attending medical school, Katie Gassman and Tobin Carson (both 2006 UMF graduates), returned to their alma mater to give a "White Coat Luncheon" presentation to current UMF students. The two University of New England Medical School students discussed their experiences in going to medical school, the application process, and more. The White Coat Luncheon was part of a guest speaker series sponsored by the UMF Pre-Med program.
In 2009, Dr. Shannon Carr, M.D. (a 1994 UMF graduate) and Dr. Shannon Bennett, D.V.M., spoke with a group of UMF Pre-Med students about their training and careers in obstetrics / gynecology and veterinary medicine, respectively.
Your Farmington Pre-Med advising team will hold periodic gatherings for all Pre-Med students (students from a variety of majors). Some of these meetings focus on the specialties in each of the medical fields and feature guest speakers.
In 2007, Rebecca Lamey, V.P. for Human Resources at MaineGeneral Health Systems met with Farmington Pre-Med students to give an overview of health career options and needs in Maine and talk about MaineGeneral's medical technician program.
In 2008, Dr. Amy Davidoff from the University of New England came to talk to UMF Pre-Med students about the interview process for medical school and UNE's Physician Assistant program.
