Outdoor Recreation Business Administration
In 2009, as part of the kickoff of the new program, an exciting Outdoor Recreation Career Conference was held on campus at Farmington. The event was designed to introduce students to the rewarding career opportunities that exist in the outdoor rec and tourism field in Maine. It featured panelists from some of Maine's leading four-season outdoor rec providers (Sugarloaf, Sunday River, Saddleback) as well as representatives from the Maine Office of Tourism, the Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and others.
The interdisciplinary Outdoor Recreation Business Administration program takes a decidedly hands-on approach to learning: placing you at on-site internships and in the field ... and on the trails, rivers, lakes and more.
The program not only encourages you to participate in internship opportunities -- it requires them. These provide you with valuable outside-the-classroom, inside-the-industry learning experiences.
These off-campus positions will help you gain a better understanding of just how this growth industry works, helping you to connect classroom theory to real-world practice while you make solid professional contacts and develop valuable, marketable skills.
The interdisciplinary Outdoor Recreation Business Administration major incorporates existing recreational programming at Farmington, such as the Fitness & Rec Center's exciting weekend excursions (hiking, camping, canoeing, snowshoeing, and more). It also works closely with on-campus student organizations such as the Outing Club and Ski Industries Club, which will help you to develop outdoor skills in a variety of areas.
Your Outdoor Rec Business Administration classes will frequently feature guest speakers -- leading industry professionals in the outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism industries -- who will come to your class and tell it like it is. These experts will give you a seasoned insider's perspective of their world and give you opportunities to ask questions in an informal academic setting. It will also provide you with golden opportunities to make valuable industry contacts.
