Bachelor of Arts: History

The History major at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) encourages you to step outside your own cultural and social experiences to examine past events from a fresh perspective, helping you to realize there are multiple ways to view historical events and their impact on the present and future. You'll learn to debunk myth and to create it anew.

Here, you'll work closely with your History professors in small classes where you'll have the opportunity to hear and be heard. In addition to small lecture classes and small seminars, you'll be encouraged to explore the wealth of human history in film, literature, art, museums, and local historical societies.

The faculty in the History program will also encourage you to create links with other disciplines, such as geography, anthropology, political science, and international and women's and gender studies, as a way to broaden your understanding of those areas' historical dimensions.

As a History student at UMFyou'll also be encouraged to participate in a number of outside-the-classroom, hands-on activities closely related to your major: collecting oral histories, assisting local historical societies, traveling to historical sites (Quebec, Boston, and across Maine), and taking part in a unique live-in experience at Norlands Living History Center (a working 1870's farm not far from campus).

Many History students also participate in history-related, student-run organizations such as The History Society, Phi Alpha Theta (a National Honor Society devoted to promoting the study of History), the UMF College Republicans, the UMF College Democrats, and the Political Science Club.

"UMF's History major provided me with the skills and tools that enabled me to earn a Fulbright Scholarship to Australia. It prepared me extremely well for graduate studies and research."
