Our NCATE-accredited Secondary / Middle Education program has an outstanding reputation for the education and placement of those aspiring to teach at the middle school and high school levels (grades 7 to 12). Ours is an intense, hands-on degree program that combines theory and practice through relevant coursework and real-world experience in school classrooms.
To help you sharpen your focus and skills in a particular teaching area, you may choose from seven different Secondary / Middle Education concentrations:
Later, in your senior year, you'll do a semester-long student teaching assignment where you'll work in a middle school or high school classroom. There, you will develop even higher levels of hands-on teaching experience as you apply college classroom theory to real world teaching situations.
Farmington will help you to become a Secondary / Middle educator who is competent, caring, and has the confidence to teach a diverse student population. You will learn first-hand what it's like to be a teacher, making a difference in the lives of children and experiencing the joy of helping grade 7-12 students to explore their changing worlds.
With a degree in Secondary / Middle Education from Farmington you will be certified to teach in grades 7 to 12 in Maine and many other states. "Teaching Practicum gets you right into the classroom, working with kids. I'm doing that now. It's broken into three weeks periods - three weeks in the school, three weeks back here on campus doing coursework. The coursework is pretty intensive but it isn't too bad if you stay on top of it. I've really enjoyed it so far."
