Special Education: grades 8-12
The University of Maine at Farmington is one of only a few colleges to offer degree programs in Special Education. In fact, our NCATE-accredited programs were among the first undergraduate Special Ed programs in the country.
Options within our Special Education program include:
Here, you'll begin your first year with a range of real-world practicum observations, and continue with inclusive and Special Education placements, culminating with a Special Ed student teaching experience in your senior year.
At Farmington, you'll have many opportunities for hands-on learning. Recently, students conducted online research and compared their findings to actual programs for children and families in Maine, along the way learning about the types of jobs and various settings in which they might work.
And last year, students developed projects using software and assistive technologies for children with disabilities. They later presented their findings to teachers in two local school districts.
Many of Farmington's Special Education students join the Council for Exceptional Children, an on-campus chapter of the national organization. The club provides many additional learning experiences, such as a recent trip to the national conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Note: Farmington's Special Education program qualifies for the New England Regional Program tuition discount - a discount of more than $4,000 per year. Through this Program, students from other New England states and Canada can apply for certain majors at Farmington and pay reduced tuition. The majors that qualify for this vary by state. See the link, New England Regional Program.

"The Special Ed faculty here truly cares about us as students. They're so willing to assist us in any way they can. I've already learned so much, and I'm really looking forward to doing my teaching practicum."
