Bachelor of Arts: Visual and Performing Arts: Music

As an embodiment of our departmental name - Sound, Performance, and Visual Inquiry - the bachelor’s degree in Visual and Performing Arts fosters inquiry into the ideas, processes, and meanings of the arts. Even though you will choose a concentration in a specific area - Art and Visual Culture, Arts Administration, Music, or Theatre - you will be encouraged, through coursework and creative projects, to engage in discussion, study, and collaboration with students and faculty across all disciplines, thereby challenging the boundaries that have traditionally separated us.

At the heart of the Visual and Performing Arts degree are the three Project courses. The gateway into the program is Project 1, a course where all Arts students work with faculty to pursue a topic, idea, or project, with each student making a unique contribution to the collective vision. In Project 2, sophomores and juniors work together on a project connected to the community for public presentation, largely independent from faculty. Project 3, the culmination of the degree, is a thesis paper, artistic project, or internship, providing seniors with a launching pad for their career after UMF.

The concentration in Music prepares you for a profession that expects more of musicians in the twenty-first century than simply mastery of instrumental technique. You will have opportunities at UMF for performance, lessons on an instrument or voice, and study of music theory, history, composition, and improvisation; we will also provide you with the intellectual foundation to explore music’s meanings and contexts, the ideas behind it, and its constantly evolving place in the world.
