- University of Maine at Farmington Dining Services Leads the Way in Recycling for Bio-fuel Production
FARMINGTON, ME (May 9, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington Dining
Services has recently joined with Green Bean Bio-Fuel, a Vassalboro-based
biodiesel production company, to lead the way among ARAMARK services
nationwide in recycling waste cooking oil for bio-fuel production. Through
the efforts of Chris Kinney, director of the University's food services,
Green Bean Bio-Fuel will collect UMF's waste cooking oil to produce the
more environmentally friendly fuel that can be purchased by local
businesses and schools to help with their energy costs and assist in
reducing greenhouse gases.

FARMINGTON, ME (May 6, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington student
Monica Hall, of Oakland, was recently awarded the Walter A. Anderson Award
by the Geological Society of Maine for the best senior research project
poster presentation at their spring meeting, April 13 at Bowdoin College.
The Walter A. Anderson Fund was founded in 1995 in recognition of Walter A.
Anderson, former Director of the Maine Geological Survey and currently
state geologist emeritus.

FARMINGTON, ME (April 30, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington Director
of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Julie Davis, after having just
completed a national search, is pleased to announce that Marc Meyers has
accepted the University's offer to serve as the UMF sports information
director. Meyers, who previously served as interim director, came to the
university from The Times Record, a mid-coast Maine newspaper where he
served as an assistant sports editor for over four years, covering local
high school sports and Bowdoin College athletics.

FARMINGTON, ME (April 14, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington Center
for Human Development will host Maine's only career fair targeted
specifically to prospective teachers from 1--4 p.m., on Monday, April 28, in
the Dearborn Gymnasium located at 163 High Street. UMF's annual Education
Job Fair is free and open to all UMF graduating seniors and UMF alumni, as
well as any certified teacher candidates from the public.

FARMINGTON (April 11, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington sophomore
geology major Anthony Greenlaw has recently been awarded the inaugural Joan
McDade Geology Field Study Fund scholarship. This award will help support
his participation in Geology of Newfoundland, a UMF May Term course taught
by Tom Eastler, professor of geology, and Doug Reusch, assistant professor
of geology, where students have the opportunity to gain field assistant
experience at diverse locations while conducting geological mapping,
studying natural geologic terrane and culture, and gaining an appreciation
for the natural world.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (April 8, 2008)--Spring on the University of Maine at

University-wide event dedicated to undergraduate research and creative
achievements. Symposium provides an opportunity for students of all ages
and disciplines to come together to showcase their original and independent
research and scholarly works and to share them with the campus and local
community. Supported by a generous gift by Michael and Susan Angelides, in
honor of their good friend Michael D. Wilson, UMF class of 1976, this
year's Michael D. Wilson Symposium has been enhanced to include both Arts
Night, a gathering of visual and performing arts, from 5--10 p.m., Tuesday,
April 15; and Symposium day scholarly presentations from 9 a.m.--4 p.m.,
Wednesday, April 16. All events are held on the UMF campus and are free and
open to the public.

Undergraduate Research Council has recently named 18 students conducting
undergraduate research projects as Spring and Summer 2008 Michael D. Wilson
Research Scholars. Each student's original research project is awarded
funding that underwrites expenses and helps encourage and promote
continuing academic investigation. The awards are funded by a generous gift
from Michael and Susan Angelides, Stonington, Conn., in honor of their good
friend and UMF alumnus Michael D. Wilson, class of 1976, who died shortly
after graduating.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (March 3, 2008)--The University of Maine at Farmington
Center for Human Development will sponsor a free and open to the public
career fair from 11 a.m.--2 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2008, in the North
Dining Hall and hallways of UMF's Olsen Student Center. The fair will
feature recruiting representatives from more than forty businesses and
organizations, ranging from mutual fund brokerages to social service
agencies and summer camps. They will be on campus to hire for full-time,
entry-level positions, summer jobs, part-time jobs and internships.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 27, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington's
third annual Dean's List recognition dinner was held Monday, Feb. 25, in
North Dining Hall at the UMF Olsen Student Center. This event honored first
time, first year students who attained Dean's List status--the completion of
12 or more credits in qualifying courses with a 3.5 grade point average or
above--during their first semester at UMF.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 26, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington has
announced its Dean's List for the Fall 2007 semester. UMF maintains a
Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12
credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point
average for the semester equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high
academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester
is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with
academic achievement. Any incompletes must be satisfactorily completed
before the student is honored with Dean's List status. Academic achievement
awarded at commencement is based on all course work taken at UMF.

"Buried Child," by Sam Shepard, will be performed at the University of

will feature the lecture "Malaga Island - The Destruction of an
African-American Community" at 11:45 a.m., on Thursday, February 14, in

Rachel Talbot Ross, director of the office of Equal Opportunity &
Multicultural Affairs for the City of Portland; and Nathan Hamilton, USM
professor of archaeology, will examine the bitter history of the
destruction of the African-American community on Malaga Island, located in
Casco Bay near Phippsburg, in the early 20th Century.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 4, 2008)--Two newly constructed "green"
buildings at University of Maine at Farmington have received official LEED.
certification from the United States Green Building Council. Both the
Education Center, the new home of the UMF College of Education, Health and
Rehabilitation; and Frances Allen Black Hall, a student residence building,
offer financially viable alternatives to traditional building methods and

FARMINGTON, MAINE (December 10, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington won
three prestigious awards at the National Association of Student Personnel
Administrators Region I conference representing the New England states and
Canadian Maritime provinces. Samantha Starrett, a UMF junior from
Leominster, Mass., received the Maine Catch a Rising Star award; Hollie
Ingraham, director of student life, received the regional Outstanding
Institutional Leadership award; and Melvin D. Adams III, assistant
director, center for student involvement, received the Maine Mid-Level
Professional award.
The Catch a Rising Star award received by Starrett, is given to an
undergraduate student who has significant involvement in campus activities
and organizations, has excelled in academics, shows great campus
leadership, and has an interest in pursuing a student affairs-related career.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 25, 2007)--The UMF Dancers will perform their
winter 2007 concert, "Connection and Alienation," at 7:30 p.m., on Nov. 9,
in Nordica Auditorium at University of Maine at Farmington's Merrill Hall.
The presentation features seven original choreographed pieces inspired by
twenty-one-year-old Franco-Algerian author Faiza Guene's novel "Kiffe Kiffe
Tomorrow," and will be performed to the live, original, Mississippi Delta
inspired blues guitar music of UMF student and music major Ben Prentiss.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 24, 2007)-- Twenty-eight University of Maine at
Farmington students were recently inducted into UMF's inaugural chapter of
the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students, by
ALD national office representative Lisa Ruch, at the organization's
installation on Sunday, Oct. 14, at North Dining Hall in UMF's Olsen
Student Center.
The UMF student candidates, currently sophomores and juniors, qualified as
honor society members during their first year at the University by
maintaining a 3.5 or higher grade point average while being a full time
student, and have been awaiting induction into the national honor society
upon the completion of UMF's application. "UMF is committed to creating a
supportive environment for student learning and educational quality," said
Theodora J. Kalikow, UMF president, "and we are so proud to have our
students receive such prestigious recognition of their hard work and
academic success."

FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 15, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington 2007
magna cum laude graduate Jenna Morency, of Brunswick, has been awarded a
Fulbright Full Grant to conduct historical research at Australia's
University of Tasmania and the Archives Office of Tasmania from February to
November 2008.
Morency, who is currently earning her master's in history at University of
Maine, will be researching the plight of U.S. citizens imprisoned by
British forces at a Tasmanian penal colony in 1839 for participating in the
Canadian Rebellion. Her research began with her senior capstone research
project at UMF advised by Associate Professor of History Ken Orosz, himself
a Fulbright honoree.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 5, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington will
be featuring the art of Brooksville, Maine-based artist Robert Shetterly in
the upcoming "Waiting for the Truth/Paintings Since 2001" exhibit from Oct.
11 to Nov. 18, at the UMF Art Gallery. This show includes selected
portraits from his traveling exhibit "Americans Who Tell the Truth," a
non-partisan series of more than 68 works, as well as many of his large,
enigmatic myth paintings. Shetterly's portraits seek to remind people of
the dignity, courage and importance of some of America's truth tellers and
to create dialogue that will help the viewer determine which truths they
value most as citizens in a democracy.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (April 17, 2007)--The University of Maine at Farmington
will add three sports to its intercollegiate athletics program announced
Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Julie Davis. UMF will add
women's lacrosse, men's volleyball and women's golf, increasing the total
number of varsity sports to 14. The women's golf program will begin
competition this coming fall, while women's lacrosse and men's volleyball
will reach varsity status in 2009-2010.
"We are very excited about expanding our co-curricular program to create
more opportunities for students to participate in our varsity athletics
programs. These sports in particular, add breadth, diversity and seasonal
balance to our sport seasons and are the perfect complement to our growing
club sport, recreation and fitness programs," said Davis. "This coincides
with our campus strategic plan and mission as a residential public liberal
arts college as well as recent NCAA legislation, which requires us to
expand the number of sports that we offer. Our goal is to not only meet the
requirements but to have a broad-based athletic program which is consistent
with Division III core values."
Women's lacrosse, which is already active on campus as a club sport, and
men's volleyball, both spring sports, will be part of a two-year
implementation plan. Cynthia Pratt, who currently coaches the UMF field
hockey team, will serve as head coach of the women's lacrosse program,
while the men's volleyball coach will be announced at a later date. The
women's golf team will begin forming this coming fall, joining with the
men's team to create a co-educational program under current men's coach Bob
Timmons.

Christopher Magri, associate professor of physics, is part of a 16-member
international team of observational and dynamical astronomers led by Steven
Ostro, astronomer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration; and Daniel Scheeres, associate

FARMINGTON, MAINE (January 31, 2006) -- UMaine Farmington's Computer
Specialist, John Rainville, recently received a certificate of appreciation
from the Maine Maritime Academy as a member of the crew of the Training
Ship State of Maine. A ceremony was held at the request of Acting Maritime

aiding relief efforts following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The

retired engineer John G. Howe of Norway, Maine, to address both the campus

FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 31, 2005) -- UMaine Farmington Assistant
Professor of English and Women's Studies Lee Sharkey will offer a
presentation on her experience at the August 2005 Women in Black
International Conference in Jerusalem - a conference which drew 750 women
peace activists from forty-four countries to discuss issues they confront,
propose strategies of resistance, and strengthen international feminist
alliances. The presentation - a narrative, through journal entries, audio
recordings, photos, and poems - will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday,
November 8, on the UMF campus in Ricker Hall.

FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 26, 2005) -- UMaine Farmington will offer a
panel discussion by four Somali women from the Lewiston area who will
describe the paths that led them from Somalia to Maine and the issues that
concern them in their new home. The event will be held at 2:25 p.m. in the

University of Maine at Farmington, and other Maine universities, community
colleges, and high schools will convene at the University of Maine at
Augusta on Saturday, October 22, for the Maine Composition Coalition
Conference, Sharing What We Know: Conversations Among Writing Teachers. The

FARMINGTON, MAINE (August 31, 2005) -- The University of Maine at Farmington
will receive $248,000 in federal appropriations approved by Congress and
administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Both Maine Senators Susan
Collins and Olympia Snowe actively supported the award. Grant funds will
help UMaine Farmington equip "smart" classrooms to support courses that
utilize and demonstrate the effective integration of technology to enhance
teaching and learning.
