    FARMINGTON, ME (June 17, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington recently honored three notable alumni and friends of the University at the annual President's Luncheon for their significant contributions to UMF and the community. Presentations were made by Theodora J. Kalikow, UMF president, to Janet Mills, attorney general of the State of Maine; and alumni Ryan Low, commissioner of Maine's Department of Administrative and Financial Services, and Bradley Reed.   • Impact of Volcanic Eruptions on Climate Investigated by UMF Trustee Professor
    FARMINGTON, ME (May 28, 2009)--David Gibson, University of Maine at Farmington professor of geology, was recently honored by UMF and the University of Maine System as UMF's 2009-2010 Trustee Professor. Gibson's research as a Trustee Professor, using UMF's exclusive X Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer lab, will provide data that can be used to investigate the role volcanic eruptions may play in impacting climate variations.   • UMF 2009 Maine Public Policy Scholar Points the Way to Economic Development in Maine
    FARMINGTON, ME (April 29, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington sophomore and 2009 Maine Public Policy Scholar, Nancy Varin, recently presented her public policy recommendation to Governor Baldacci. Varin's research has determined that supporting community-scale wind power efforts by enacting legislation that encourages investment in locally-owned projects would promote sustainable economic development in Maine.   • UMF Wins National Power Down for the Planet Challenge Through Commitment to Energy Savings
    FARMINGTON, ME (April 22, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington has won the first-ever, national "Power Down for the Planet" challenge, a national competition to fight global warming by pledging to reduce the amount of energy used by computers on campus. Over 24 percent of the UMF campus community committed to sustainable computing practices, demonstrating the University's campus-wide dedication to responsible environmental stewardship. (more)

  • UMF Student Awarded Coveted Grant for Scholarly Research
    FARMINGTON, ME (April 15, 2009)--Jamez Terry, a University of Maine at Farmington junior and history major, has been awarded a coveted research grant by the Massachusetts Historical Society, ordinarily given for doctoral research or to established scholars. This prestigious $5,000 New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grant is designed to encourage research excellence at the highest levels and will enable Terry to pursue scholarly research this summer at major historical library collections throughout New England.   • University of Maine at Farmington Showcases Scholarship and Innovation with Eleventh Annual Michael D. Wilson Symposium
    FARMINGTON, ME (April 15, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington will hold its eleventh annual Michael D. Wilson Symposium, a two-day, University-wide event in celebration of outstanding scholarship and creative achievements across academic disciplines, on April 28 and 29. Symposium brings together UMF students of all ages to showcase their original and independent research and scholarly works and to share them with the campus and local community. Supported by a generous gift by Michael and Susan Angelides, in honor of their good friend Michael D. Wilson, UMF class of 1976, this year's Michael D. Wilson Symposium begins with Arts Night, a gala of visual and performing arts, from 6:30-9 p.m., Tuesday, April 28; and Symposium day scholarly presentations from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 29.   • University of Maine at Farmington Partners with Local School to Grow Sustainable Recycling Initiative
    FARMINGTON, ME (March 11, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington has partnered with the W. G. Mallett School and the Sandy River Recycling Association to help implement a composting project at the Farmington elementary school. This joint effort is a natural outgrowth of the highly successful composting program at UMF and was created to instruct and inspire sustainable waste recycling practices at the earliest learning levels and to provide UMF students with real world opportunities for learning and leadership.   • University of Maine at Farmington Announces Dean's List for the Fall 2008 Semester
    FARMINGTON, ME (February 25, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington is proud to announce its Dean's List for the fall 2008 semester. UMF maintains a Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12 credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point average for the semester equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with academic achievement. Any incompletes must be satisfactorily completed before the student is honored with Dean's List status. Academic achievement awarded at commencement is based on all course work taken at UMF. (more)

This increase in student aid, at a time when families are struggling through the current economic downturn, is part of the continuing effort by UMF to help college-bound Maine students have affordable access to a quality education.   • University of Maine at Farmington Student Honored as Outstanding Future Professional
    FARMINGTON, ME (February 2, 2009)--University of Maine at Farmington student Alissa Thebarge was recently honored as an Outstanding Future Professional by the Maine Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She is one of two Maine college students chosen in 2008 for this distinction. A senior from Windham, Thebarge is a community health education major with a minor in nutrition and presently maintains a 4.0 grade point average. She was selected by MAHPERD for this award for her academic achievement, campus and community involvement, leadership qualities and professional standing. As part of her award, she will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the organization's Eastern Districts Annual Conference in February held in Lancaster, Penn. (more)

  • University of Maine at Farmington Presents Winter Arts Week, Dec. 7-14
    FARMINGTON, ME (December 1, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington's Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Ministry of Experimental Arts will present a series of arts events during their Winter Arts Week, Sunday, Dec. 7 through Sunday, Dec. 14. UMF Community Orchestra 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, UMF Nordica Auditorium This concert will feature two master works, the Beethoven Violin Concerto and the Dvorak Ninth Symphony, "The New World." Trond Saeverud will conduct the concert and also perform as soloist in the violin concerto. The concert is open to the public. Tickets are available at the door the night of the performance and are priced at $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and are free to UMF students with University I.D. Showings of Video/Music and Selected Shorts 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, Room M220 UMF Merrill Hall This presentation will feature a video/music installation by Sean Chase and Matthew Hernandez, and "Selected Shorts from UMF Media Makers," a short program of highlights from recent accomplishments in video at UMF. These shorts range in content from mockumentary to moving studies of fear and release. This event is free and open to the public. Original Student Plays 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, UMF Nordica Auditorium Two new original UMF student plays will be presented immediately following the video showings. The first play "Well, There's a Train, There's Got to be a Murder," by Benjamin Gray is about an author who creates characters who turn out to have their own motives, a murderer who has a crush on the author's muse and an incompetent detective who is to solve the case. In the second play, "Exercises," Angela Hooper explores a complicated love affair gone awry. In the words of the author, there are "miscommunications, unrequited love, and an affection hidden beneath the sheets" in "a tale of two lovers who find themselves at a breaking point." This program is free and open to public, but due to mature content and language, it is not suitable for children. Original Student Musical Compositions 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, UMF Nordica Auditorium A concert featuring new works of UMF student composers will include "Kaspar's Suite Day Dream" for flute, clarinet, bass trombone, violin, viola, cello, electric guitar, electric bass, and surround sound effects by Nathaniel Burns; "Dunce" for flute, clarinet, bass trombone, xylorimba, violin, viola and cello by Elliot Lyons; "For Tesla" for violin, cello and laptop by Seth Fogg; "Two Movements for Piano" by Joshua Case; and "Ex Unus Nota" by Andrew Thompson, also for solo piano. UMF Community Chorus 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 and 3 p.m., Sunday Dec. 14, Farmington's Old South Church Two performances will be featured by the UMF Community Chorus, conducted by Bruce McInnes. These performances will include Vivaldi's "Gloria" and Marc Antoine Charpentier's "Messe de Minuit pour No?l." This concert is open to the public. UMF Student Art Exhibit 12-4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9 through Sunday, Dec. 14, UMF Art Gallery Throughout the week, the UMF Art Gallery will host a student exhibit by members of Katrazyna Randall's Contemporary Theory and Practice class. Curated by Kristen Bisson, the show includes works by Emily Baer, Timothy Berry, Kristen Bisson, Joshua Demello, Meagaan Irish, Logan Leland, William Mosenfelder, Giselle Scherle, Matthew St. John, Elliott Vogel and Joanna Wilbur. Additional student art will also be exhibited throughout Merrill Hall, curated by Sarah Levensalor.     FARMINGTON, ME (November 24, 2008)--Among the many UMF students conducting undergraduate research projects this semester, 11 have recently been recognized by the University of Maine at Farmington Undergraduate Research Council as fall 2008 Michael D. Wilson Research Scholars and Fellows. Under the Wilson program, each student's original research project is awarded funding that underwrites expenses and helps encourage and promote continuing academic investigation. These awards are funded by a generous gift from Michael and Susan Angelides, Stonington, Conn., in honor of their good friend and UMF alumnus Michael D. Wilson, class of 1976, who died shortly after graduating. (more)

UMF maintains a Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12 credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point average equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with academic achievement.     FARMINGTON, ME (May 9, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington Dining Services has recently joined with Green Bean Bio-Fuel, a Vassalboro-based biodiesel production company, to lead the way among ARAMARK services nationwide in recycling waste cooking oil for bio-fuel production. Through the efforts of Chris Kinney, director of the University's food services, Green Bean Bio-Fuel will collect UMF's waste cooking oil to produce the more environmentally friendly fuel that can be purchased by local businesses and schools to help with their energy costs and assist in reducing greenhouse gases.     FARMINGTON, MAINE (December 10, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington won three prestigious awards at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Region I conference representing the New England states and Canadian Maritime provinces. Samantha Starrett, a UMF junior from Leominster, Mass., received the Maine Catch a Rising Star award; Hollie Ingraham, director of student life, received the regional Outstanding Institutional Leadership award; and Melvin D. Adams III, assistant director, center for student involvement, received the Maine Mid-Level Professional award. The Catch a Rising Star award received by Starrett, is given to an undergraduate student who has significant involvement in campus activities and organizations, has excelled in academics, shows great campus leadership, and has an interest in pursuing a student affairs-related career.     FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 24, 2007)-- Twenty-eight University of Maine at Farmington students were recently inducted into UMF's inaugural chapter of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students, by ALD national office representative Lisa Ruch, at the organization's installation on Sunday, Oct. 14, at North Dining Hall in UMF's Olsen Student Center.     FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 15, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington 2007 magna cum laude graduate Jenna Morency, of Brunswick, has been awarded a Fulbright Full Grant to conduct historical research at Australia's University of Tasmania and the Archives Office of Tasmania from February to November 2008. Morency, who is currently earning her master's in history at University of Maine, will be researching the plight of U.S. citizens imprisoned by British forces at a Tasmanian penal colony in 1839 for participating in the Canadian Rebellion. Her research began with her senior capstone research project at UMF advised by Associate Professor of History Ken Orosz, himself a Fulbright honoree. (more)

UMF maintains a Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12 credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point average equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with academic achievement.   • University of Maine at Farmington to Add Three Varsity Sports
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (April 17, 2007)--The University of Maine at Farmington will add three sports to its intercollegiate athletics program announced Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Julie Davis. UMF will add women's lacrosse, men's volleyball and women's golf, increasing the total number of varsity sports to 14. The women's golf program will begin competition this coming fall, while women's lacrosse and men's volleyball will reach varsity status in 2009-2010. "We are very excited about expanding our co-curricular program to create more opportunities for students to participate in our varsity athletics programs. These sports in particular, add breadth, diversity and seasonal balance to our sport seasons and are the perfect complement to our growing club sport, recreation and fitness programs," said Davis. "This coincides with our campus strategic plan and mission as a residential public liberal arts college as well as recent NCAA legislation, which requires us to expand the number of sports that we offer. Our goal is to not only meet the requirements but to have a broad-based athletic program which is consistent with Division III core values." Women's lacrosse, which is already active on campus as a club sport, and men's volleyball, both spring sports, will be part of a two-year implementation plan. Cynthia Pratt, who currently coaches the UMF field hockey team, will serve as head coach of the women's lacrosse program, while the men's volleyball coach will be announced at a later date. The women's golf team will begin forming this coming fall, joining with the men's team to create a co-educational program under current men's coach Bob Timmons. (more)

  • University of Maine at Farmington Hosts Annual Career Fair on Thursday, March 15
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 26, 2007)--The University of Maine at Farmington Center for Human Development will sponsor a free and open to the public career fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007, in the North Dining Hall and hallways of UMF's Olsen Student Center. The fair will feature recruiting representatives from more than fifty businesses and organizations, ranging from mutual fund brokerages to summer camps for children with special needs. They will be on campus to hire for full-time, entry-level positions, summer jobs, part-time jobs and internships. (more)
  • Musical Route 66 Makes Its Theatrical Debut at University of Maine Farmington
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 13, 2007)--"Route 66," the musical, will make its theatrical debut next month at the University of Maine at Farmington's Alumni Theater. This Theatre UMF production features UMF students and several faculty members in a high-energy ride that promises to take audience members on a nostalgic trip from Chicago to Los Angeles on one of America's most beloved highways. Performance dates are March 8, 9, and 10 at 7:30 p.m., and March 11 at 2 p.m., at UMF's Alumni Theater. (more)
  • University of Maine at Farmington President Theodora J. Kalikow Receives Green Building Award from the Maine Chapter of the United States Green Building Council
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 2, 2007)--Theodora J. Kalikow, president of University of Maine at Farmington, was recently awarded a 2007 Green Building Leadership Award from the Maine Chapter of the United States Green Building Council for her pioneering role in advancing environmentally responsible buildings in Maine. The award was presented by Richard Pattenaude, president of University of Southern Maine, at the chapter's annual awards party held at the Portland Museum of Art.   • Professors at University of Maine at Farmington Research Maine's Forest Resources and Management with National Grant
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 1, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington was recently awarded two grants totaling $16,500 from the National Science Foundation's EPSCoR Bioproducts Research Initiative at the University of Maine. The grants, which will be implemented by Drew Barton, associate professor of biology, David Correia, assistant professor of geography, and Matt McCourt, assistant professor of geography, will fund research that examines forest management and community values regarding forestland.   • Expanded Infant-Toddler Playgroup Program Offered at the University of Maine at Farmington
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (January 10, 2007)--The University of Maine at Farmington's Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education is currently offering an expanded playgroup program for infants and toddlers ages 3 and younger and their parents or caregivers for spring 2007. The purpose of these sessions, which begin during the week of January 22, is to provide authentic, hands-on experiences for UMF students and safe and appropriate programs for very young children and their families. These groups offer parents and children opportunities for social interactions with each other, as well as other parents and children, and are facilitated by a UMF professor and UMF students. (more)
  • University of Maine at Farmington Professor Emeritus Awarded $50,000 Arts Fellowship
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (December 11, 2006)--Wesley McNair, an emeritus professor and writer-in-residence at the University of Maine at Farmington, has been awarded a $50,000 USA Ford Fellowship given by United States Artists, a new charity for the arts. McNair's award, one of the fifty fellowships granted this year, was announced at a recent press conference in New York City attended by the other recipients. Following the ceremony, the fellows were entertained at Jazz at Lincoln Center with performances kicked off by jazz artist Wynton Marsalis. (more)

    FARMINGTON, MAINE (December 1, 2006)--The University of Maine at Farmington was awarded two prestigious regional honors representing all of New England and Canada at the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators conference held recently in Portland. Terri Groulx, a senior geology & geography dual major, from Rochester, N.H., was awarded the Catch a Rising Star award for the state of Maine for her academic achievement, leadership skills, and her contributions to the UMF community. The Family and Friends Fall Fest weekend coordinated by Melvin D. Adams III, assistant director of UMF's Center for Student Involvement, received the Maine State Program of the Year award for its innovation, creativity and contribution to campus life. (more)
  • University of Maine at Farmington Professor Part of International Team of Astronomers that Reveals Potentially Hazardous Asteroid
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (November 28, 2006)--University of Maine at Farmington's Christopher Magri, associate professor of physics, is part of a 16-member international team of observational and dynamical astronomers led by Steven Ostro, astronomer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and Daniel Scheeres, associate professor of aerospace engineering, the University of Michigan. The team used radar imaging to obtain the most detailed information yet about the nature of a potentially hazardous asteroid, 1999 KW4. (more)

    FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 26, 2006)--Ten University of Maine at Farmington students, conducting eight undergraduate research projects, were recently named the inaugural Michael D. Wilson Scholars. Each scholar was awarded funding to help underwrite an original undergraduate research project. The scholarships are funded by a generous gift of Michael and Susan Angelides, Stonington Conn., in honor of their good friend, and UMF alumnus, Michael D.   • University of Maine at Farmington Announces Recipients of Prestigious Alumni Scholarship
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (September 26, 2006)--Nine first-year students are attending the University of Maine at Farmington this year on the prestigious Alumni Scholarship. Offered through the university's Alumni Association, the Alumni Scholarship provides full tuition at the in-state level for the academic year 2006-2007. (The tuition rate based on a normal two-semester enrollment of 32 credits is $5,824.) The scholarship is renewable for a total of eight semesters as long as the student scholar maintains a 3.0 GPA and abides by the university's student conduct code. (more)

    FARMINGTON, MAINE (July 10, 2006)--The University of Maine at Farmington's Partnerships for Success program has recently been awarded an Excellence and Innovation in Education grant for $48,087 from the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP), and the AT&T Foundation -- the philanthropic arm of AT&T Inc.   • University of Maine at Farmington Cross Country Coach Competes in Ironman Triathlon
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (July 17, 2006)--Katie Herbine, who is entering her second season as the University of Maine at Farmington's head women's cross country coach and who led the Beavers to the NAC Championship last year, recently succeeded in a competition of her own--the Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene Triathlon held in Idaho. Herbine was the only woman from Maine to compete in the event and, despite the challenge of 98-degree weather, placed 34th in the Women Aged 25-29 Division, attaining the greatest athletic achievement of her life.
