University of Maine at Farmington Student Awarded Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation Scholarship
FARMINGTON, ME (February 8, 2010)--University of Maine at Farmington student
Benjamin Laflin was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Maine
Higher Education Assistance Foundation. A native of Farmingdale and
graduate of Hall-Dale High School, Laflin is a senior at UMF majoring in
business and economics.
This year the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation trustees
selected 12 Maine colleges and universities to receive scholarships. The
participating school chooses the student scholarship recipients. All
recipients must be a Maine high school graduate, must be at least a
sophomore majoring in a business related subject and must have good
academic standing.
"Ben is an outstanding student," said Waleck Dalpour, UMF professor of
business and chair of the UMF Division of Social Sciences, Business and
Global Studies. "Not only is he committed to the highest level of academic
achievement, but he has also embraced a leadership role in and out of the
classroom that will help him make his way in today's complex business world."
The Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation was established in the
1950's to support a guarantee fund for student loans. The founders
included a wide range of banks, businesses, community organizations and
individuals. In 1990, the MeHEAF trustees, to continue the original intent
of the founding members, initiated a scholarship program funded by the
return on the original loan guarantee funds.
MeHEAF was administered by the Maine Bankers Association from 1990 until
2009, and is now managed by the successor organization, the Maine
Association of Community Banks (MACB), 489 Congress Street, Portland. Since
1990, a total of $248,000 in scholarships has been awarded.
The award was presented by Pamela M. Green, director of member services at
Maine Association of Community Banks.
