Merrill Hall

Gorgeous arches and ivy, hand-carved woodwork, gigantic old windows. This is where it all began... sort of. Because construction at Merrill Hall wasn’t completed by opening day in August of 1864, the school’s 31 students instead gathered in an attic above a downtown Farmington commercial building, called Beal’s Hall. And that’s where they met 'til Merrill Hall officially opened that winter. Today, Merrill Hall is UMF’s main administration building, housing the President’s Office, Provost’s Office, Financial Aid & Student Accounts, the Registrar’s Office, Administrative Services, Human Resources Office and other departments. It’s also the home of beautiful Nordica Auditorium (UMF’s main performance hall); the Learning Assistance Center, Program of Basic Studies, and Upward Bound Program; the community access TV station (MBTV), and more. Merrill Hall is the oldest building on a public campus in Maine and is on the National Register of Historic Places in Maine.
